Mega Yacht Business is Booming in USA

The Baltimore Sun reports today that the yacht business is booming! Despite the pinch many are feeling due to high fuel prices, mega yachts are apparently selling well. While half of the sales are coming from Americans, buyers from other parts of the world -- like the Middle East, Russia and South America are buying up the rest. The owner of Trinity Yachts, the largest U.S. builder located in Gulfport, MS. and New Orleans, told the Associate Press that he could use more workers to keep up with the orders.

Southampton Boat Show September 12-21

The 2008 PSP Southampton Boat Show is blowing out 40 candles this year, and the celebrations kick off as the Show returns to Mayflower Park in September. In association with ITV Meridian, the Show takes place from September 12-21 and includes Europe's largest purpose built on-water marina. Last year the event featured 600 exhibitors.

The Show, which is the sixth largest consumer exhibition in the UK, is perfect for day trippers and boating, sailing or water sports enthusiasts alike. Whether visitors come to consider all the latest boating gear or simply discover a new hobby, this celebratory year will see over 135,000 people enjoy an array of activities on the water, and this year, National Boat Shows (NBS) is taking the Show back to its roots, honoring the heritage and history of the past 40 years.

Our colleagues over at Boatshed Guernsey are offering two of their lucky customers tickets with flights included!

Hampshire's Southampton is steeped in maritime history and is the country's premier cruise port with more luxury ships arriving and departing than from the rest of the UK put together.

The first docks in Southampton were built in 1838 and since then many great transatlantic liners, such as RMS Queen Mary, Aquitania and Queen Elizabeth have had Southampton as their home port.

Debut of $300 Million Yacht Named "A"

The 390 foot mystery yacht that has been cruising the Baltic Sea since spring has finally been identified. The Wall Street Journal reports today that the motor yacht--only marked with a letter "A" belongs to 36 Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.

While longer than a football field, A barely ranks among the 10 largest private yachts in the world, trailing just behind Octopus, the 416-footer owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The cost -- at least $300 million -- is also not a record. Eclipse, the unfinished yacht of fellow Russian Roman Abramovich, is more than 500 feet long and cost at least $100 million more. Mr. Melnichenko's boat, at cruising speed, burns about 691 gallons of diesel fuel per hour.

Read all the details about the cream colored leather walls, stainless steel whirlpool baths, the bed in the master bedroom that rotates on a turntable and the finger pad security system required to enter the master suite and control rooms. Mr. Melnichenko, who was still a bachelor when they started building "A" asked for a 480 square yard disco with a waterproof karaoke platform and a bar built of Baccarat crystal, according to the WSJ.

The design was created by Philippe Starck who apparently is known for designing lemon squeezers and luxury hotels.

Yacht Industry Leaders Unite to Attract Yachts to San Diego

The more superyachts that come to San Diego, the more economic vitality is generated for the region’s fast-growing marine industry.

That’s the rallying cry of the San Diego Superyacht Association (SDSA), a new coalition of San Diego’s marine-related companies that serve the local large-yacht industry. The group’s mission is to promote San Diego as a world-class superyacht destination and provide a conduit to marine services and suppliers.

“We all agree that the time has come for all of us to work together to attract even more large yachts to San Diego,” said Paul Daubner, a San Diego-based yacht management specialist and the group’s elected president. “We can provide the vast array of products and services these boats require, which in turn stimulates the local marine economy. By joining forces, we can enhance San Diego’s position as one of the world’s leading yacht destinations.”

In recent years, San Diego has emerged as the West Coast’s premiere superyacht destination for several reasons:

  • its year-round temperate climate, which is similar to that of the Mediterranean, home to many of the world’s largest and most luxurious yachts
  • its West Coast location, which provides a triangular nexus connecting Mexico and Central America, the Pacific Northwest and the South Pacific
  • the growing availability of world-class yacht repair facilities and numerous marine support firms located along the calm, protected waters of San Diego Bay
  • the crew friendly environment and recreational amenities of San Diego and the surrounding areas

SDSA’s 16 founding members include representatives from yacht brokerages, yacht repair firms, marinas and other leading yacht-industry firms. The coalition is the first and only such association on the West Coast of the U.S.

Superyachts (also referred to as “megayachts”) are generally considered to be any yacht that exceeds 120 ft. in length. With such large vessels, whose value ranges from $10 million to $100 million and higher, it is commonplace that at least 10% of the vessel’s market value is required to keep it operating each year. Expenses go for such essentials as captain and crew, provisions and fuel.

For repairs, it’s not uncommon for such yachts to spend several million dollars on refits –the industry term for complete refurbishing of the vessel – along with engine re-powers, hull and topside paintwork and general maintenance.

According to industry figures, there are currently more than 7,000 superyachts around the world, with the largest concentrations of such vessels located in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. In addition, nearly 300 newly-built superyachts 120-ft or larger are launched each year world-wide.

“With all that San Diego has to offer, industry experts believe our region is in prime position for terrific growth,” said Daubner. “The potential here is enormous. San Diego Superyacht Association’s goal is to work together to successfully promote our assets – world-class tradespeople, companies and services – to the world’s top yacht captains, owners and yacht management firms.”

The San Diego Superyacht Association is a non-profit corporation. The following is a list of founding members:

• Paul Daubner, Fraser Yachts
• Neil Wilson, Driscoll Boat Works
• Deborah Pennell, Shelter Island Marina
• Terry Ruppert, Knight & Carver YachtCenter
• Mark Drewelow, C2C Inc.
• Ron Dehne, Hawthorn Power Systems
• Dean West, Honor Marine Electronics
• Peter Taliercio, Kona Kai Marina
• Fred Larsson, Marine Group Boat Works, LLC
• David Roscow, Northrop and Johnson
• Craig Stephens, Rocket Research
• Judy Donnelly, San Diego Marine Exchange
• Doug Sharp, Sharp Design
• Ernie Buck, Valley Power Systems, Inc.
• Cris Wenthur, Wenthur Law Group, LLP

Rent This Yacht for $1 Per Second

CNN.com called her one of the more desirable charters in the yachting world, so when she makes an appearance off the coast of Long Beach, California, it's a pretty big deal!

Princess Mariana, one of the most impressive mega yachts in the world, was launched in 2003, but it was available for charter, after a $12 million refurbishment in 2006.

The 258 feet luxury yacht has been reported by CNNMoney as one of the most desirable charters, which rents for a whopping $606,500 a week.

The figure comes out to about $1 per second. Now, that’s the ultimate in luxury yachting. Princess Mariana is done with every luxury possible you would expect on a mega yacht. It boasts a spacious master stateroom, two double VIP staterooms, two double staterooms, twin stateroom 13-seat cinema, a fully equipped gym, a helipad, and a golf driving range. The staterooms have plasma TVs and private en-suites. One of the most impressive amenities on-board is the Beach Club, a dry dock where the tender lives. When the tender is outside, the dock can be transformed into a 12m swimming pool with underwater lighting.

How New Biofuels May Put Your Engine at Risk

The August Yachting Magazine has an article on how the new push for biofuels may be harmful to your engine. Read the entire article here.

The diesel fuel you buy today is very likely to be different from the fuel you purchased last year. It is ULSD, Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, with a sulfur content of not more than 15 parts per million-quite a difference considering that the former low-sulfur diesel could contain up to 500 ppm. Although ULSD is not mandatory for locomotive, off-road or marine uses, your fuel dock will likely be dispensing it since supplying LSD (ignore the unfortunate acronym) to a marina will not be economical for most fuel depots.

Unlike cars, boats are often unused for days, weeks or months, during which a substantial amount of water can accumulate in the fuel. And that's a problem for E-10 fuel, because it is not as stable in your fuel tank as conventional gasoline.
