Debut of $300 Million Yacht Named "A"

The 390 foot mystery yacht that has been cruising the Baltic Sea since spring has finally been identified. The Wall Street Journal reports today that the motor yacht--only marked with a letter "A" belongs to 36 Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.

While longer than a football field, A barely ranks among the 10 largest private yachts in the world, trailing just behind Octopus, the 416-footer owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The cost -- at least $300 million -- is also not a record. Eclipse, the unfinished yacht of fellow Russian Roman Abramovich, is more than 500 feet long and cost at least $100 million more. Mr. Melnichenko's boat, at cruising speed, burns about 691 gallons of diesel fuel per hour.

Read all the details about the cream colored leather walls, stainless steel whirlpool baths, the bed in the master bedroom that rotates on a turntable and the finger pad security system required to enter the master suite and control rooms. Mr. Melnichenko, who was still a bachelor when they started building "A" asked for a 480 square yard disco with a waterproof karaoke platform and a bar built of Baccarat crystal, according to the WSJ.

The design was created by Philippe Starck who apparently is known for designing lemon squeezers and luxury hotels.
